The Equal Opportunities Commission joins hands with the banking sector to promote fair customer service to minority groups

11/06/2015

To create a pluralistic and inclusive society free of discrimination, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has been promoting fair treatment to minority groups in the provision of goods, services and facilities in the public and business sectors.

While the issue of access to service by ethnic minorities has drawn considerable media attention recently, the EOC has also handled related complaints lodged by minority groups from time to time. To address these concerns, the EOC has embarked on the first joint effort with The Hong Kong Association of Banks (HKAB) and The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB) to co-organize the “Commissioners Dialogue - Treat Customers Fairly - Sharing from Equal Opportunities Commission” on 6 July 2015.

Based on the principles of the Treat Customers Fairly Charter developed by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, this seminar aims at promoting banking practitioners’ knowledge of anti-discrimination legislation and raising their sensitivity to the ethnic culture and gender identity of customers from minority groups. Content includes elaboration of anti-discrimination ordinances, sharing about typical scenarios encountered by minority groups in opening bank accounts or applying for credit cards, and suggestions on good practice of treating customers fairly and sensitively.

Bank staffs from front office as well as those centralized offices on compliance, channel management or public relations, etc., are welcome for the training. Interested banking practitioners can obtain the enrolment information from the website of the EOC (www.eoc.org.hk) and the HKIB (www.hkib.org).
