The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) held a briefing session on Job Opportunities for Ethnic Minorities in Airline, Public Transport, Elderly Care & Personal Heath Care Industries on 16 December 2016 (Friday) at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education.
The session aimed to better inform ethnic minority (EM) secondary school students, career masters and teachers of potential job and training opportunities. At the same time, the session also acted as a platform for employers wishing to hire EM young people to provide more detailed information about their industries and network with relevant parties.
Representatives from four companies in the airline, public transport and elderly care industries gave presentations to over 80 participants, including F.4 to F.6 students from 13 secondary schools, on various career pathways. The companies participated in the session include Cathay Pacific, Kowloon Motor Bus (1933) Limited, Pok Oi Hospital and Hiu Kwong Group. In addition, representatives from the International Federation of Holistic Aromatherapy and Employees Retraining Board were also invited to introduce their vocational training programmes for EMs.
Professor Alfred CHAN Cheung-ming, Chairperson of the EOC, said EM students are often presented with limited options in the labour market once they leave school due to language barrier as well as a lack of information.
“By hosting the briefing session, the EOC hopes to inform the students, their teachers and career masters that there are actually many companies that want to hire EM.” he said. “The session will hopefully provide a platform to further enhance the upward social mobility of EM students.”
Following the successful conclusion of the event, the EOC will hold further sessions in the future to provide more support for EM students, career masters and teachers.
