EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Family Status Discrimination Case
11/10/2004
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today issued legal proceedings under the Family Status Discrimination Ordinance, Cap 527 in the District Court on behalf of a man who was dismissed by his employer because he could not work the same amount of overtime hours as other workers for the reason of looking after his son.
The EOC has granted legal assistance in this case because it deals with an important principle as to whether dismissing an employee who failed to comply with the overtime requirement because of his family status may amount to family status discrimination. By taking this case to court, the EOC believes the court's decision will serve as a guideline to employers regarding the imposition of overtime requirements on all employees.
