EOC Welcomes Today's Court Judgment

13/11/2002

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) welcomes today's judgment by the District Court in a case involving claims of discrimination brought against the Commission by its former employee. The Court dismissed the former employee's claims as "completely unmeritorious", thereby vindicating the Commission.

"The wide ambit of the anti-discrimination legislation is designed to afford sufficient protection to those who are genuinely discriminated against on the ground of their disability," said Ms. Anna WU, Chairperson of the Commission, "but those whose claims are unmeritorious and unsupported by facts and evidence will not be allowed to abuse the legislation or to benefit from it."

"The Commission will continue to work to ensure proper remedies are afforded to genuine victims of discrimination and at the same time prevent abuse," said Ms. WU.
