EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Pregnancy Discrimination Case

11/12/2002

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 480 in the District Court on behalf of a woman who alleges that she was discriminated against by her former employer on the ground of her pregnancy.

Although there is authority in Hong Kong that states pregnancy discrimination in employment is unlawful, the EOC finds that dismissal of women upon their return from maternity leave is quite prevalent and must be eliminated from the workplace. Accordingly, the EOC has granted assistance in this case and will seek all due remedies.
