EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Sexual Harassment Case

18/12/2002

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (18 December 2002) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 480 in the District Court on behalf of a woman who was sexually harassed by her colleague and was eventually victimized and dismissed by her employer after she complained against the sexual harassment.

The EOC has granted legal assistance in this case on the basis that this type of sexual harassment in the workplace is prevalent in Hong Kong. In this particular case, the unlawful acts in question occurred after hours and the case will establish precedent for future cases. The case should also raise public awareness of sexual harassment in the employment field and the responsibility of the employer in relation to sexual harassment committed by employees.
