EOC Statement on International Women's Day

07/03/2005

In observance of the United Nations' International Women's Day, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Mr. Raymond Tang said, "Hong Kong recognizes women's strong contribution in our society. Remarkable progress has been made in recent decades, women now take on many roles, in the family, as well as in the political, social, cultural and economic fields. But barriers and prejudice still exist, preventing many women from realizing their full potential. Removing these barriers such as discrimination and stereotyping remain high on the Commission's agenda."

"Today, as women take on a more prominent role in all walks of life they also face growing pressures to achieve work life balance in their daily lives. Pregnancy dismissals still form the largest number of complaints under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, and our research shows that most sexual harassment cases in the work environment are unreported. The Commission is also working with NGOs to study other current gender-related issues such as poverty and women's rights," Mr. Tang added.

"It is important to value and give greater recognition to the potentials and achievements of women. I urge policy makers to address their needs, to enhance their development and full participation in all spheres in society so that the entire community, including girls, boys and men and not just women themselves will stand to gain," Mr. Tang concluded.
