EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Pregnancy Discrimination Case

29/03/2005

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (29 March 2005) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 480 in the District Court on behalf of a woman who alleges that she was discriminated against by her former employer on the ground of her pregnancy in that she was dismissed during her pregnancy.

Although there is authority in Hong Kong that states pregnancy discrimination in employment is unlawful, the EOC finds that dismissal of pregnant women is quite prevalent and must be eliminated from the workplace. By taking this case to court, the EOC hopes to maintain public awareness to address this issue and to remind employers that it may be unlawful to dismiss an employee because of her pregnancy.
