Hong Kong's First Equal Opportunities Musical

25/10/2003

About nine hundred people enjoyed Hong Kong's first "Equal Opportunities Musical", featuring Ms. Gigi LEUNG Wing-kei, Mr. Chris WONG Hoi-kan and Mr. Alex FONG Lik-sun at Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium today (Saturday, 25 October, 2003). The musical was produced by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and RTHK Radio 2.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mr. Michael WONG Kin-chow, Chairman of the EOC said, "It is essential to raise awareness and let members of the public know more about their rights and protection under the three anti-discrimination ordinances. We aim to raise public awareness and acceptance of equal opportunities values through this musical. I hope that everyone involved in this project including the audience would stand to gain from the experience. We are very honoured to have Mr. HO Wai-lung as the director, Ms. Gigi LEUNG Wing-kei, Mr. Chris WONG Hoi-kan and Mr. Alex FONG Lik-sun to be involved in this musical, and I would also like to thank RTHK Radio 2 for making this endeavour possible."

The "Equal Opportunities Musical" is a two-month educational programme, beginning with recruitment and training of volunteer performers in September. A drama-training seminar and a radio drama series followed earlier this month. The highlight of the programme is today's stage production of the musical. Twenty-three volunteers have been selected to perform with the pop stars live on stage, after completing a series of training sessions conducted by famous drama directors, Mr. CHUNG King-fai and Mr. HO Wai-lung, professional playwright, Mr. CHAN Hing-ka and popular DJ, Mr. Michael LEUNG Gai-cheung from September to October 2003.

An estimated one million listeners have learnt more about equal opportunities by tuning in to RTHK Radio 2, for a radio drama series featuring Ms. Gigi LEUNG Wing-kei and Mr. Chris WONG Hoi-kan in the past two weeks. The 10-episode radio-drama series highlighted different real life cases of sex discrimination, disability discrimination and family status discrimination.

Members of the public will be able to listen the musical and radio drama to learn about the concept of equal opportunities. The musical will be broadcast on 27 October, 2003 (Monday) at 3:00pm-5:00pm during "Showbiz", RTHK Radio 2 (FM94.8-96.9), and the 10-episode radio drama series is uploaded on the RTHK website (http://www.rthk.org.hk). The musical will be uploaded on the EOC website (http://www.eoc.org.hk) in November 2003.
