Launching of the First Equal Opportunities TV Docu-drama Series

26/01/1998

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) announced a 1998 educational initiative today (26 January 1998). A series of TV docu-drama on discriminatory cases, titled "非 常 平 等 任 務 ", produced by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), will be broadcast on TVB Jade Channel on every Sunday from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. starting 1 February 1998.

Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Fanny CHEUNG Mui-ching, Chairperson of the EOC, said, "Public education is a long-term effort which requires the participation of the general public and the support of the media. The production of the docu-drama series is one of the public education initiatives taken by the Commission to enhance public awareness and understanding of the anti-discrimination legislation.

The 6-episode docu-drama which highlighted different stories of sex discrimination, disability discrimination and family status discrimination is based on true local and overseas cases. The programme will feature analysis of discriminatory acts and the legal perspective of equal opportunities issues as well as interviews with clients and members of the public to share their real life experience of discrimination. The docu-drama series aims to provide some possible solutions in circumstances where a person is being discriminated.

"Under the law, discrimination means giving less favourable treatment towards a person on the ground of one's sex, marital status, pregnancy, disability, or family status. If you are discriminated against unlawfully because of these grounds, the law is on your side, and so is the Equal Opportunities Commission," Dr. CHEUNG said.

EOC Officers will staff a phone-in session after the broadcast of each episode from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m from 1 February through 8 March 98. Members of the public are welcome to call 1872338 if they want to give their comments on the programme or raise questions on equal opportunities issues.

Ms. Siao Fong Fong, the newly appointed Equal Opportunities Ambassador, was present at the press conference to promote the launching of the TV series.
