The Equal Opportunities Commission Staged its First Community Roadshow

16/01/1999

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) staged its first community roadshow today (16 January 1999) at Shatin New Town Plaza to promote equal opportunities.

Mrs. Betty Tung, wife of the Chief Executive officiated at the opening ceremony. An exhibition on equal opportunities issues and anti-discrimination legislation was held immediately after the opening ceremony. EOC Members also met with members of the public to talk about discriminations and equal opportunities issues.

The event is the first of a series of roadshows to promote equal opportunities in all 18 districts throughout the territory.

"We wish to promote the work of the EOC and bring the message of equal opportunities to the neighborhood," said Dr. Fanny Cheung Mui-ching, Chairperson of the EOC.

"Staging community roadshow is also our way of saying: we are here to listen, please talk to us and we will try our best to help."

Mr. David Lan, Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr. H.T. Lui, Acting Director of Home Affairs and representatives from the 18 Provisional District Boards were at the Opening Ceremony to show their support for equal opportunities.

"I am extremely pleased to have the support of the Home Affairs Department and the District Boards in our initiative to reach out to the community to promote equal opportunities," said Dr. Cheung.

The roadshows will feature exhibitions, video presentations, quiz games, drama performances, meeting the public programme and various other activities and performances aiming at enhancing public understanding of equal opportunities.

"We will be working with community organizations in various districts in organizing some of the activities," said Dr. Cheung.
