EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case

24/07/2007

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (24 July 2007) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, Cap 487 in the District Court on behalf of a woman who had a knee injury and required a pair of crutches to assist her walking. The plaintiff alleged that her employer discriminated against her by dismissing and harassing her on the ground of her disability.

The EOC has granted legal assistance in this case because disability discrimination in employment is prevalent in Hong Kong. The EOC hopes to remind employers that they need to take steps in preventing harassment and disability discrimination in the workplace.
