Finale of the Equal Opportunities Diversity Project 2008

23/11/2008

To promote social inclusion, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and RTHK Radio 2 held the finale of the "Equal Opportunities Diversity Project 2008" today (Sunday, 23 November 2008). The Equal Opportunities Diversity Project (平等機會多元共融行動) is a year-long radio programme running on RTHK Radio 2 from November 2007 to December 2008. The theme of this project is to promote racial harmony, inclusion of persons with a disability, gender equality and accommodation for persons with family status.

Broadcast once a week between November 2007 and December 2008, this social integration initiative is designed to promote inclusion and diversity through weekly interviews with celebrities on equal opportunities issues, Ethnic Minorities’ Cultural Class, Equal Opportunities Slogan Competition and radio promotion segments. This ceremony is the finale of this project.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Raymond TANG, Chairperson of the EOC said, "In the past 12 months, over 70 guests including Legislative Councillors, representatives from NGOs, rehab groups, women’s groups and ethnic minority organizations were interviewed in our radio programme to raise public awareness and acceptance of all individuals, irrespective of their race, gender, disability or family status. I wish to thank our media partner RTHK Radio 2 for bringing the message of diversity and inclusion to Hong Kong’s radio listeners through this programme.”

In the radio segments “Ethnic Minorities’ Cultural Class”, representatives from ethnic minority organizations and NGOs, including the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society and Christian Action, were invited to teach the languages and cultures of ethnic groups from Indonesia, Thailand, Pakistan, Nepal, Japan, Korea, India, Sri Lanka and The Philippines.

The Equal Opportunities Slogan Competition attracted an overwhelming response from members of the public. Over 9600 entries were received for the competition. Mr. Raymond TANG was joined by EOC Member Mr. Saeed UDDIN as well as Co-opted Members Mr. Amirali Bakirali NASIR and Ms. Garling WONG to officiate at the ceremony and present prizes to winners of the slogan competition.
