EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Sex Discrimination Case
09/12/2010
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (9 December 2010) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 480 in the District Court, on behalf of a complainant against her employer for a claim of sexual harassment and sex discrimination. The complainant alleged that her employer had failed to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace and had not handled her complaint of sexual harassment against a male co-worker properly, leading to the complainant’s dismissal from the job.
It has been brought to the EOC’s attention that there was a considerable number of cases whereby employees were exposed to sexual harassment in the workplace. By taking this case to court, the EOC hopes to raise public awareness about employers’ responsibility in preventing sexual harassment in the workplace.
