EOC teams up with Steven Ma to produce short film series “Under the Same Sky”

As part of the “Equal Opportunities Month” (EO Month), a celebratory campaign for the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR, the EOC is collaborating with cross-media producer Steven MA Chun-wai to produce a series of short films titled Under the Same Sky.

Speaking at a press conference on 22 June 2022 where the project was announced, EOC Chairperson Mr Ricky CHU Man-kin said, “The series will shed light on the everyday struggles of underrepresented communities in Hong Kong, from carers and people with low socio-economic status to non-ethnic Chinese and people with disabilities. We hope it will drive conversations about how different sectors in society can work together to make Hong Kong a more diverse and inclusive place.”

Delivering opening remarks at the event, Dr Ferrick CHU Chung-man, Executive Director (Operations) of the EOC said, “While anti-discrimination laws are essential to protecting the fundamental rights of various marginalised communities, we cannot truly change people’s minds and uproot prejudice unless they can relate to what others are going through. We are therefore taking a softer, more human-centred approach with this series. The underlying idea is to encourage understanding and empathy.”

Mr Ma, who is producing, writing and directing the series, joined a chit-chat session with Mr Gary WONG Chi-him, Convenor of the EOC’s Community Participation and Publicity Committee at the press conference. He revealed that there would be a total of eight episodes, slated for release this autumn. He had also performed a theme song for the series, titled “I Believe” and composed by Mr LEE Hin, a local musician with visual challenges. A music video has been uploaded to the EOC YouTube page.

The event was attended by members of the cast, including Ms Zaina SZE, Mr Matthew MA, Mr Cliff CHAN, Ms Cynthia HO, Mr Ken LING, Ms Christine LAI and Ms Iris LO.
