Promote racial inclusion in celebration of IDERD

To mark International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) on 21 March, the EOC is rolling out various initiatives to promote racial diversity and inclusion.

Throughout March, over 60 primary and secondary schools are participating in our Racially Friendly Campus Recognition Campaign, under which they are encouraged to organise school-based initiatives and activities to raise students’ awareness in tackling racial discrimination. Students are also encouraged to take photos with their friends or schoolmates with different ethnicities so that they can better understand one another through interaction and communication.

On 18 March 2023, an “All Races As One” seminar for schools will be held for education practitioners to discuss how to promote racial inclusion in schools. A group of panellists, including EOC Member Dr Rizwan ULLAH, as well as Hina BUTT, the first local Chinese language teacher of South Asian ethnicity, Dr Jan GUBE, Assistant Professor of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at The Education University of Hong Kong, popular YouTuber New Dellily and English Schools Foundation’s DEI Project Officer Hope WONG will provide tips and insights on how to step up racial inclusion discussion in classrooms.

On the same day, the EOC will officially launch the “All Races As One” Learning Kit on Eliminating Racial Discrimination, and School Policy Framework for the Prevention of Racial Discrimination and Harassment with an aim to better equip schools with useful materials and skills to promote racial inclusion on campus.

Separately on YouTube, you can watch our latest video that featured a number of non-Chinese residents from different racial backgrounds sharing how challenging it is for them to rent flats in Hong Kong. On the playlist, you can find videos of different languages to introduce the Race Discrimination Ordinance and give tips on navigating daily lives for non-Chinese speakers.
