The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) launches a bus body advertising campaign entitled “Fight the virus together as one human race” today (8 April 2022) as a part of our year-long publicity on promoting racial inclusion and equality.  The advertisements will be displayed on 50 buses along various routes for three weeks.

 

This campaign is a continuation of our MTR advertisement launched last year with two posters showing Hong Kong people of different racial and cultural features wearing masks sewn by ethnic minority women under WEDO Global’s “We Mask Action” project.

 

The key message in the advertisements is to remind that most of us have been playing our part in the fight against the pandemic, regardless of gender, race, age, and occupation. The secondary message is one of unity among diversity. It focuses on racial minorities standing and contributing alongside all Hong Kong people as one despite language and social barriers that some may face.  

 

The Race Discrimination Ordinance prohibits discrimination, harassment and vilification against a person on the ground of their race in prescribed areas of activities. Yet, to promote racial equality and inclusion, public education is equally important for removing biases and prejudices.

 

EOC Chairperson Mr Ricky CHU Man-kin said, “We have seen repeated backlashes on the racial minority communities, including migrant domestic workers, following the breakout of infection clusters.  On the contrary, their efforts and contributions alongside all Hong Kong people are always overlooked and sidelined.”  He went on urging the society to “focus our collective energies on fighting the virus, not each other.  If nothing else, the pandemic has taught us that we are interconnected and the only way to overcome it is through coming together as a community.”
