平等機會委員會主席朱敏健先生致辭(只備英文版)

30/04/2023

Good afternoon. It gives me great pleasure to be here today at this job fair. First of all, I would like to commend Citybus and Kowloon Mosque for jointly organising this event. This meaningful cross-sectoral collaboration not only serves to promote the career opportunities of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, but it also helps foster cultural exchange and raise awareness of the importance of racial diversity and inclusion.

At the Equal Opportunities Commission, we have always been promoting and facilitating such cross-sectoral collaboration, as part of our effort to advance the equal opportunities of ethnic minority communities. Whether born in Hong Kong or relocated here, our ethnic minority communities – whose population exceeds 300 000 excluding the foreign domestic workers – have made Hong Kong their home. They have made significant contributions to the social, economic and cultural development of our city. Yet due to cultural differences and language barriers, they continue to face challenges in education and employment, in accessing services and using facilities, and in integrating into society.

We firmly believe that to tackle these challenges, we need the joint effort of different sectors and parties. In 2018, we launched the Racial Diversity and Inclusion Charter for Employers to provide guidelines for companies and organisations, which aspire to push forward their diversity and inclusion or D&I agenda, and create a workplace that is free of racial discrimination and prejudice. We are delighted to see that the signatory list of the Charter has grown from 11 in 2018 to over 300 to date. Among the signatories is Citybus, which was in fact the first public transport operator in Hong Kong to sign this Charter.

Today’s job fair is yet another showcase of Citybus’s staunch commitment to creating a culturally diverse and inclusive workplace. We are hopeful that events like these can inspire and encourage more organisations in the public and private sectors to follow, as they tap into the diverse talent pool of our ethnic minority communities, as well as the many benefits of a multicultural and inclusive workplace. In this respect, the EOC stands ready to offer our assistance to organisations, whether it is developing and enhancing recruitment and HR policies, lining up culturally sensitivity training for staff or building network with the ethnic minority communities. We look forward to working together with different sectors, and building a truly diverse and inclusive workplace and society for all.

Once again, thank you for having me today. I wish the job fair great success and everyone a fruitful experience. Thank you.
