EOC’s response to the “Report on Hong Kong Taxi Passengers Survey”
In the “Report on Hong Kong Taxi Passengers Survey” released by the Hong Kong Taxi Council (HKTC) last week, announcing results from the fourth quarter of 2017, more than 70% of the respondents considered that there is an insufficient supply of wheelchair accessible taxis (WATs) in Hong Kong. The HKTC expressed the wish for the Government to provide the Council with subvention or allowance to diversify the types of taxi and increase the supply of WATs. In response to the findings of the survey, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has issued the following statement today (28 December 2017):

Easy Access to Information on Banking Services by Ethnic Minorities
The Hong Kong Association of Banks (HKAB), the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) jointly published today (28 December 2017) the information on banking services in seven languages commonly used by ethnic minority (EM) community. The materials are available on the respective websites of HKAB, HKMA, and EOC.

EOC’s response to the suggestions of installing visual fire alarm and 992 SMS emergency service for persons with hearing impairment
On 18 December 2017, a group of persons with hearing impairment came to the office of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) to express their dissatisfaction with the Housing Department on not installing visual fire alarms in the housing units of residents with hearing impairment. The group indicated that consideration was being given on lodging a formal complaint. In addition, they stated that the 992 SMS emergency service (992 SMS system) by the Police was only available to users upon prior registration, which is different from the existing 999 system. Also, the 992 SMS system does not accept photos and videos, hence causing inconvenience to persons with hearing impairment. In response to the concerns aforesaid, the EOC has issued the following statement:

The EOC launches Easy-to-Read Guide for Accessible Air Travel in Hong Kong
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) launched today (13 December 2017) a new publication, Easy-to-Read Guide for Accessible Air Travel in Hong Kong (the “Guide”), to introduce accessible travel, provide an overview of the rights and obligations of persons with reduced mobility (PRMs) as air passengers and offer helpful tips on making journeys accessible and smooth. PRM refers to any person whose mobility is reduced due to age or any disabilities (temporary/permanent) and requires appropriate attention and adaptation of services in using air transport.

EOC welcomes the 2022 Gay Games to be held in Hong Kong
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (31 October 2017) warmly welcomes the successful bid to host the 2022 Gay Games in Hong Kong. The Gay Games are the largest LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex) sporting event in the world, which have been held every four years since 1982.

Hailing from outer space and looming above us at three metres tall, they are certainly no ordinary equal opportunities ambassadors! They have come to Earth for a basketball match, and beyond that, to help our young children understand that it does not always have to be “my team” versus “your team” and that we can all live in harmony with our differences.

The Equal Opportunities Commission’s response to the Policy Address 2017
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (11 October 2017) welcomes the new initiatives to promote equal opportunities in the Policy Address 2017, particularly the Government’s plan of submitting legislative amendment proposals to the Legislative Council in the 2017-18 legislative session for implementing nine priority recommendations under the Discrimination Law Review as proposed by the EOC in 2016.

The EOC urges kindergartens to embrace diversity and inclusion in student admission
As the application process for kindergarten admissions for 2018-19 will get underway soon, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) would like to remind kindergartens in Hong Kong to adopt a fair and inclusive admission policy for all including children from the ethnic minorities (EM). This advice comes in the midst of continued concerns from Non-Chinese parents that school information by some kindergartens is only available in Chinese and interviews for young applicants are conducted in Cantonese. Some allegedly simply point them towards schools with high concentrations of EM students even though the parents prefer that their children study in an immersed Chinese environment.

The EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Pregnancy Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (25 August 2017) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (SDO), Cap. 480 in the District Court, on behalf of a woman (the Claimant) who previously worked for a company (the Respondent) as an accounting clerk. The Claimant alleged that she had been discriminated against by the Respondent on the ground of her pregnancy by dismissing her before she resumed work from her maternity leave.

The EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Harassment Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has issued today (1 June 2017) legal proceedings in the District Court under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487, on behalf of a woman (the “Claimant”) who suffered from both injury at work and bipolar disorder. The Claimant alleged that her immediate supervisor (the “Respondent”) had harassed her on the ground of her disability by often calling her by an offending nickname and made a discriminatory remark against the Claimant on a particular day.

Appointment of Members of Equal Opportunities Commission (Issued by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region)
The Government announced today (18 May 2017) that the Chief Executive has appointed six new members and re-appointed nine incumbent members to the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) for a term of two years with effect from May 20, 2017. Amongst the nine re-appointed incumbent members, Dr Maggie Koong May-kay has been re-appointed for one year with effect from May 20, 2017.

The “Equal Opportunities Diversity Project” public event took place at Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre this afternoon (12 March 2017). EOC & GRC of CUHK Issue Statement Calling for the Introduction of Legislation against Discrimination on the Grounds of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Intersex Status
Today (9 March 2017), the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and the Gender Research Centre (GRC) of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong have issued a joint statement (Please refer to Appendix) calling on the Government to launch a public consultation and introduce legislation against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex status as soon as possible.

The EOC’s response to the Policy Address 2017
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (19 January 2017) welcomes the new initiatives to advance equal opportunities in the Policy Address 2017. In the Chapter relating to Human Rights in the Policy Agenda 2017, it highlights the agenda of initiating discussion with the LegCo on the prioritized recommendations under the Discrimination Law Review as proposed by the Equal Opportunities Commission and promoting a culture of diversity, inclusiveness and mutual respect in the community through a series of measures.
