EOC Chair urges early ratification of new UN convention on disability
Following adoption by consensus of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability by the United Nations' General Assembly yesterday, 13 December 2006, Mr. Raymond TANG, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) welcomed the achievement and said he looked forward to the early ratification of the Convention by Member States.

EOC Conducts Formal Investigation on Accessibility
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) announced today (8 December 2006) that it would conduct a Formal Investigation on Accessibility in certain Publicly Accessible Premises under s 66 of the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO) Cap.487. The terms of reference of the Formal Investigation was gazetted today, and the investigation will formally commence on 11 December 2006.

EOC Statement on International Day of Disabled Persons
In supporting the United Nation's International Day of Disabled Persons (3 December, 2006), Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) Mr. Raymond TANG said, "In the last ten years, complaints filed under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance constitute almost 60% of all complaints received by the Commission. This testifies to the needs, difficulties and barriers faced by persons with a disability in conducting their daily lives."

EOC Statement on World AIDS Day
In supporting the United Nations' World AIDS Day (1 December 2006), Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), Mr. Raymond TANG said, "HIV/AIDS is not only a global health issue. It is a socio-economic development issue as well as a human rights issue. AIDS can strike women, men, heterosexuals, homosexuals, children and newborns."

EOC maps out direction to advance Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (23 November 2006) released its Study on Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value (EPEV), a long term project undertaken by the Commission to advance the principle of EPEV in Hong Kong.

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (20 October 2006) initiated legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487 in the District Court on behalf of a woman who was dismissed by her employer because of her leg injury and taking sick leave for treatment of illness.

EOC Partners Employers and Human Resource Practitioners to Promote Workplace Equality
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (October 17, 2006) inaugurated its EO Club to raise awareness and improve compliance level in Hong Kong's employment sector. So far, 150 human resources practitioners from close to 100 corporates, government departments, universities, SMEs and NGOs have joined to implement diversity in their respective workplaces.

EOC responds to Policy Address
In response to the Chief Executive Mr. Donald TSANG's policy speech today (11 October 2006), Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Mr. Raymond TANG said, "Family-friendly employment policies (FFEPs) is a main focus of our work, and we will continue to devote efforts to ensure the sustainability of FFEPs in the employment sector. We are therefore pleased with the government's commitment to actively work with the business community and NGOs to promote family-friendly measures."

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Cases
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (22 September 2006) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487 in the District Court on behalf of two Plaintiffs in two separate cases. Both Plaintiffs alleged that their former employers discriminated against them by dismissing them on the ground of their disability.

EOC Response to Appeal Court Judgment
The Court of Appeal in a case involving whether homosexual men have been unjustifiably discriminated against by certain provisions contained in the Crimes Ordinance, Cap. 200 relating to buggery held that section 118C of the Crime Ordinance is unconstitutional and breaches the Basic Law and the Bill of Rights.

EOC Welcomes new UN convention to protect rights of persons with disabilities
The EOC welcomes the conclusion of negotiations on the International Convention to Protect and Promote the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities, which will pave the way for the Convention to be formally sent to the General Assembly for adoption at its next session, this September.

EOC Promotes Equal Opportunities through Funding Programme
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) is funding more community programmes to heighten gender awareness and promote acceptance of equal opportunities in Hong Kong. The EOC announced that application for the second batch of the 2006/07 "Community Participation Funding Programme on Equal Opportunities" would start today (30 June 2006). The funding programme aims to encourage community organizations to carry out projects in promoting equal opportunities and eliminating discrimination on the grounds of sex, marital status, pregnancy, family status and disability. This year, the Commission accords higher priority to sponsoring projects related to gender equality, workplace best practices and improving awareness of the Family Status Discrimination Ordinance (FSDO).

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (13 June 2006) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487 in the District Court on behalf of a woman who was suffering from pituitary tumour. The plaintiff alleged that her former employer had discriminated against her by dismissing her on the ground of her illness while she was on sick leave and shortly after she had notified her employer of her condition.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (8 June 2006) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 480 in the District Court on behalf of a woman who alleges that she was discriminated against by her former employer on the ground of her pregnancy in that she was dismissed after she submitted a notification of her pregnancy.

Revamped EOC Website Geared to Enhance Services to the Public
The new and improved Equal Opportunities Commission website launched today (May 10, 2006) has updated its site structure and enhanced its content to ensure better delivery of services to the public. The three anti-discrimination laws, the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, and the Family Status Discrimination Ordinance are highlighted for web visitors to learn more about the ordinances, such as application of the laws, case analysis and related equal opportunity issues.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) launched a major social integration initiative "Equal Opportunities Diversity Project" in conjunction with RTHK Radio 2 today (Monday, 24 April 2006). EOC Calls for Gender Equality on International Women's Day
In observance of the United Nations' International Women's Day, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Mr. Raymond TANG said, "Today, we are aware that many more opportunities and choices are open to women, but challenging issues remain in realizing women's rights to ensure a fair and equitable environment for all. The Commission is focused on advocating gender equality, so that both genders can work together to transform their traditional roles in order to meet the different needs of women and men in Hong Kong."

Following a meeting with "殘疾人士爭取交通半費優惠聯席" (an alliance of persons with disabilities for concessionary public transport fares) today (5 January, 2006), Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) Mr. Raymond Tang said, "Access to public transportation is a basic and important right for everyone. I understand this is a particular issue affecting many persons with disabilities (PWDs), one which has remained unresolved for several years. The Commission supports any effort to help persons with disabilities (PWDs) overcome barriers which hinder that access, and we urge the government and public transport operators to consider viable solutions for PWDs."
