Youths called on to take the initiative in eliminating discrimination
“Career Challenge 2010/11”, the youth mentorship programme co-organized by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG), held its first sharing session on 17 December 2010 (Friday). Renowned performing artistes, Mr. Teddy Robin and Ms. Maria Cordero, were the first guest mentors. They shared with hundreds of secondary students their experience on how to break down stereotypes and overcome hurdles on the road to success. Dr. Rosanna Wong, Executive Director of the HKFYG and Mr. Lam Woon-kwong, Chairperson of the EOC officiated at the launching ceremony.

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Sex Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (9 December 2010) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 480 in the District Court, on behalf of a complainant against her employer for a claim of sexual harassment and sex discrimination. The complainant alleged that her employer had failed to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace and had not handled her complaint of sexual harassment against a male co-worker properly, leading to the complainant’s dismissal from the job.

Reach Higher to See Wider: Equality & Diversity – An Excursion to Ngong Ping 360
On 27 November 2010 (Saturday), the Volunteer Team of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), together with renowned artist Mr. Lawrence CHENG Tan-shui, accompanied about 20 students with special education needs from Haven of Hope Sunnyside School (Sunnyside School) to visit the Ngong Ping 360 via round-trip cable car ride. Sunnyside School, under the Haven of Hope Christian Service, is a boarding school for children with severe intellectual disabilities from age 6 to 18. Half of the participating students are wheelchair users. Some parents and school staff also participated in the event. The goal of the visit was to put into action the concepts of diversity and inclusion, and promote the merits of an accessible environment to society. In addition, the visit aimed to raise public awareness to support equal opportunities for persons with disabilities and their right to participate in family and social activities.

The EOC Submitted Recommendations to the Development Bureau on Making Hong Kong a Barrier-free City
Members of the Working Group on Access of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has met with the Secretary for Development, The Hon Mrs Carrie LAM CHENG Yuet-ngor today (15 November 2010) to exchange views on barrier-free facilities and universal design. The Working Group presented to the Development Bureau a submission with recommendations to make Hong Kong a barrier free city. (Please refer to Attachment A for the EOC’s Submission to the Development Bureau.)

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (29 Oct 2010) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 487 in the District Court, on behalf of a complainant who alleged that his employment was terminated because he applied for sickness pay after taking his leave for gout and knee pain.

EOC Announces Findings of the Formal Investigation on Accessibility in Publicly Accessible Premises
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (7 June 2010) announced the findings of the “Formal Investigation on Accessibility in Publicly Accessible Premises” which examined 60 publicly accessible premises owned or managed by the Housing Authority, Hong Kong Housing Society, The Link Management Ltd. and various Government departments (Target Premises).

“Colour Our World”—The Equal Opportunities Diversity Project
To promote social inclusion, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and RTHK Radio 2 held the finale of the “Equal Opportunities Diversity Project (平等機會多元共融行動)” today (Saturday, 5 June 2010). This project is a year-long radio programme running on RTHK Radio 2 from May 2009 to May 2010. The theme of this project is to promote racial harmony, inclusion of persons with a disability, gender equality and accommodation for persons with family status.

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Sex Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (20 May 2010) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (Cap 480) in the District Court on behalf of a woman who alleged that she was discriminated against by the school authority on the ground of her sex by imposing on her a dress code which in effect was more restrictive for female teachers than male teachers and eventually she was pressurized to resign.

New Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission appointed (Issued by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region)
The Government announced today (January 13) the appointment of Mr Lam Woon-kwong as the new Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) for a term of three years commencing February 1, 2010.
