Chairperson of Equal Opportunities Commission Appointed(Issued by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region)
The Government announced today (December 15) that the Chief Executive had appointed Mr Raymond Tang Yee-bong as Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) for five years with effect from January 12, 2005.

EOC Chairperson's End of Term Review
Speaking to the news media at the end of her one year term as Chairperson of the EOC, Mrs. Patricia Chu said it has been a challenging year for the EOC, as everyone has contributed to undertake the tasks that was pledged twelve months ago when she was appointed the Commission's Chairperson.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today initiated legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487 in the District Court on behalf of a woman who was dismissed by her employer because of taking sick leave for medical appointments and for an operation.

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (12 November 2004) initiated legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487 in the District Court, on behalf of a woman who alleged that her former employer treated her less favourably and dismissed her on the ground of her walking difficulty as a result of thrombosis.

EOC Fights Stigmatization and Stereotyping
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and Commercial Radio 1 today (6 November 2004) held an EO Expo 2004 roadshow at Metroplaza, Kwai Fong, a reaching out to the community initiative, which showcased Mrs. Alice LAU, Commissioner of Inland Revenue and Mr. LIU Guozhu, Chief Instructor (Food Preparation) of the Chinese Cuisine Training Institute, to share their unique experiences of breaking traditional barriers to achieve career goals. A mental health care professional from Kwai Chung Hospital and another guest speaker recounted their experiences of fighting discrimination and how stigmatization could impact on mental health service users and their families.

EOC Breaks Down Stereotyping
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and Commercial Radio 1 today (30 October 2004) held an EO Expo 2004 roadshow, a reaching out to the community initiative, which showcased Hong Kong's top-ranking policewoman, a visually impaired recipient of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award and a champion female fencer. Hundreds of shoppers at the Tuen Mun Town Plaza, students and residents joined in the programme, which will be broadcast on Commercial Radio 1 (FM 88.1 – 89.5), 9:00pm on 30 October 2004.

Equal Opportunities Expo 2004 Kicks Off to Reach Out to the Community
Equal Opportunities Expo, the annual major public education initiative of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), was launched today (17 October 2004) at Island Resort Mall in Siu Sai Wan. "Reaching Out for Equal Opportunities" is the theme for this year's Expo, which is fully supported by Commercial Radio 1 and features weekly radio programmes, four roadshows, Career Challenge 2004, a photo competition and a series of community events.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today issued legal proceedings under the Family Status Discrimination Ordinance, Cap 527 in the District Court on behalf of a man who was dismissed by his employer because he could not work the same amount of overtime hours as other workers for the reason of looking after his son.

Launching of Equal Opportunities Educational Module
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has launched today (21 September 2004) a new educational module for teachers to help their students understand Hong Kong's three anti-discrimination ordinances. Jointly developed with Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), "A Mission for Equal Opportunities - Student Forum" is a useful tool for teachers and students to learn about the impact of discrimination, and how to prevent it.

EOC Promotes FSDO through Funding Programme
Community organizations and schools planning to carry out projects in promoting equal opportunities may apply for the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC)'s Community Participation Funding Programme, starting today (28 June 2004) until 31 July 2004. In this second batch of its funding programme, the EOC will continue to promote better understanding of the Family Status Discrimination Ordinance (FSDO). The funding programme aims to encourage community initiatives in undertaking projects to eliminate discrimination on the grounds of family status, sex, marital status, pregnancy and disability. As the FSDO is the latest of Hong Kong's three anti-discrimination ordinances, preference will be given to related applications.

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (3 June 2004) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 487 in the District Court, on behalf of a teacher whose contract was terminated due to his illness. The plaintiff suffered from cancer and his employer dismissed him in October 2002 by claiming that his contract of employment was void because he was unable to report for duty at the beginning of the school year in September 2002.

EOC Launches New E-learning Programme for Teachers
A new web based training programme "Equal Opportunities Begin at School" was launched today (2 June 2004), by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) for all teachers in Hong Kong. The e-learning training programme, jointly developed by the EOC and the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB), is designed to assist educators to accommodate students with special educational needs in schools and also aims to familiarize teachers with the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO) and the impact the law has on the educational environment. Through a tried and tested interactive process using video, audio, graphics and text, teachers are able to develop policies and appropriate practices that allow equal access to education for all students.

EOC and Patrick Yu issue Joint Statement
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and Mr. Patrick Yu have reached a settlement on the issues related to Mr. Yu's contract, and the matter is now satisfactorily resolved. The successful settlement resulted from amicable discussions, and both parties have agreed to maintain confidentiality on the nature and content of the settlement. The Commission and Mr. Yu are fully prepared to co-operate with the Independent Panel of Inquiry on its terms of reference.

EOC Conducts Work Review for 2003
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) will strengthen liaison with its stakeholders and assess feedback from the community to enhance services to the public as a major work priority for 2004. During a review of the Commission's work in 2003, Mrs. Patricia CHU told members of the news media today (Thursday, 26 February 2004) that after seven years, it is timely for the EOC to conduct an overall review of its work, in order to focus on the mainstreaming of equal opportunities in Hong Kong.
