EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Pregnancy Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (26 November 2015) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (Cap. 480) in the District Court on behalf of a woman (the Claimant) who previously worked for a company (the Respondent) as a beautician. The Claimant alleged that she was discriminated against by the Respondent on the ground of her pregnancy by dismissing her shortly after she had informed the Respondent about her pregnancy.

The EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has issued today (19 November 2015) legal proceedings in the District Court under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487, on behalf of a woman (the “Claimant”) who previously worked for a property management company (the “Respondent”) as an assistant building supervisor. The Claimant had taken sick leave for a certain period owing to her right ankle fracture resulting from a work injury. On the day she resumed duty after sick leave, she was requested by the Respondent to take and exhaust all her annual leave starting from the following day. She was later dismissed with immediate effect when she resumed duty again. The Claimant alleged that the Respondent had discriminated against her on the ground of her disability by dismissing her.

EOC welcomes facilitation measures for people with disabilities and ethnic minorities to cast their votes at polling stations
With the District Council election coming up this Sunday (22 November 2015), the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (19 November 2015) calls on the Government, the relevant Government Departments and frontline workers to take active measures to ensure that the equal voting rights of voters with disabilities or from ethnic communities will not be deprived due to inaccessible polling stations or language barriers.

The EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Sex Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has issued today (29 October 2015) legal proceedings in the District Court under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (SDO), Cap. 480, on behalf of a man (the “Claimant”). The Respondent is an entertainment company that owns and manages a karaoke & disco club. The Claimant alleged that the Respondent had discriminated against him on the ground of his sex as he had to pay a higher entry fee than other female patrons to get the same services given by the karaoke & disco club owned and managed by the Respondent. <br />

The EOC Holds Seminar on Formulation of Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy in Sports Sector
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) organised today (25 September 2015) a Seminar on Formulation of Anti-Sexual Harassment Policy in Sports Sector, in collaboration with the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) and supported by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD). This seminar aimed to promote the message of preventing sexual harassment to the sports sector, and to equip the organisations concerned with the skills to formulate their own policy on preventing sexual harassment and handle related complaints.

The EOC Issues Statement on the Government’s Open Recruitment of the EOC Chairperson
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) welcomes the Government to continue adopting open and transparent procedures for recruiting the next EOC Chairperson. Meeting between the Equal Opportunities Commission and Parents for The Family Association

The EOC urges kindergartens to embrace diversity and inclusion in accepting ethnic minority students
With the new school year drawing close, the Equal Opportunities Commission (“EOC”) is urging kindergartens and schools in Hong Kong to be fair and inclusive in accepting ethnic minority (“EM”) children. The advice comes in the midst of complaints received by the EOC in relation to the admission of EM students to kindergartens and schools, and media reports that some kindergartens provide school information only in Chinese, and conduct interviews for young applicants in Chinese only, which may place EM students at a disadvantage.

The EOC Presents Its Work at the 20th Annual Meeting and Third Biennial Conference of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) presented an update on its work to advance equality in Hong Kong today (27 August 2015) at the 20th Annual Meeting and Third Biennial Conference of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APF) held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from 26-28 August. This follows the presentation given by the Commission at the last Biennial Conference in Doha, Qatar in 2013. This year’s Conference theme is “Preventing torture and protecting the rights and dignity of people held in places of detention.”

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has issued today (29 July 2015) legal proceedings in the District Court under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (SDO), Cap. 480, on behalf of a woman (the “Claimant”) against her former employer (the “Respondent”) for being vicariously liable for the unlawful sexual harassment acts committed by the Respondent’s employee, and for victimising the Claimant because of her sexual harassment complaint.

Banking Sector Seminar to Promote Fair Customer Service and Equal Opportunities for Minority Groups Draws Enthusiastic Response
The first-ever joint seminar of The Hong Kong Association of Banks (HKAB), The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB) and Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) for banking staff was carried out successfully on 6 July 2015. The success further fortified the partnership to continuously promote fair treatment to customers, in particular to those from minority groups.

The EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case – Dismissal through Non-Renewal of Employment Contract
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has issued today (16 July 2015) legal proceedings in the District Court under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487, on behalf of an elderly home caregiver (the “Plaintiff”), whose employment contract was not renewed by her employer after she went on sick leave for a certain period owing to her wrist injury that rendered her unfit to return to work. The Plaintiff alleged disability discrimination in that the non-renewal decision was made on the ground of her wrist injury and, but for her wrist injury, her employment contract would have been renewed for a period of at least another two years, just like the previous four renewals she received for the past 8 consecutive years.

The EOC Announces Research Findings of Two Funded Research Projects on Ethnic Minorities
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) announced today (7 July 2015) the results of two funded projects under the Funding Programme of Research Projects on Equal Opportunities 2013/14, namely “Empowerment through Business: South Asian Entrepreneurship in Hong Kong” and “Breaking through the barriers – Ethnic minority success stories and their implications for policy intervention in Hong Kong”. The findings suggest that ethnic minorities (EM) face struggles to secure their identities and success in the Hong Kong society.

The EOC Reports on Work Plans and Progress
Six new Members of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), namely Mr Ivan CHAN Chi-kin, Professor Susanne CHOI Yuk-ping, Ms Elizabeth LAW, Ms Juan LEUNG Chung-yan, Ms Shirley Marie Therese LOO and Miss YU Chui-yee, attended their first official meeting of the Commission today (Thursday 19 June 2015). Along with the re-appointed Members of the EOC, they discussed the various matters related to the Commission’s business, including the latest work progress of the EOC’s strategic priorities at the 110th EOC Meeting.

“Play Smart: Say No to Sexual Harassment” The EOC Organises Anti-Sexual Harassment Workshop for University Student Leaders
To further the prevention of sexual harassment in the tertiary education sector, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) organised today (5 June 2015) a workshop for university student leaders, “Play Smart: Say NO to Sexual Harassment”. The workshop aims to enhance students’ understanding on preventing sexual harassment in planning and carrying out campus activities and events, including orientation camps. A total of 47 student representatives from eight tertiary institutions attended the workshop, which is being organised for the second year following last year’s successful pilot training session.

The EOC Announces Findings of “Questionnaire Survey on Sexual Harassment for the Sports Sector”
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) announced today (14 May 2015) the findings of the “Questionnaire Survey on Sexual Harassment for the Sports Sector” conducted in end 2014, which showed that a large majority of the national sports associations (NSAs) in Hong Kong did not have an anti-sexual harassment policy, nor do they see the urgent need of formulating one.

The EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case – Access and Use of Accessible Toilet
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has issued today (13 February 2015) legal proceedings in the District Court under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 487, on behalf of a person with impaired physical mobility who uses a wheelchair. The person was unable to access and use an accessible toilet in a restaurant, owing to the fact that the toilet concerned was used as a storeroom filled with sundry items, and was in conditions of disrepair (water leakage) that posed safety hazards to users. Despite repeated requests, the company operating the restaurant has failed to carry out the necessary works to remove the barriers and rectify the situation.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) announced today (22 January 2015) the results of the “Sexual Harassment – Questionnaire Survey for Education Sector 2014”, which indicates a substantial increase in the number of schools that have an anti-sexual harassment policy since this survey was last conducted in March 2013.
