The EOC calls for objective reporting and portrayal of mental illness in the media
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) denounced a discriminatory headline “癲人出沒”, published in a local newspaper on 2nd December 2012, depicting persons with mental illness as “crazy lunatics”. The EOC is of the view that the article’s text and images are suspected to be appealing to negative public emotions against persons with mental illness.

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Pregnancy Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (23 November 2012) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 480 in the District Court, on behalf of a woman who alleged that she was discriminated against by her former employer on the ground of her pregnancy. The Plaintiff alleged that her former employer deliberately inserted a one-day break between her old and new contracts to avoid statutory maternity leave pay.

EOC Announces Findings of the Study on Equal Learning Opportunities for Students with Disabilities under the Integrated Education System
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (Thursday, 22 November 2012) announced the findings of the “Study on Equal Learning Opportunities for Students with Disabilities under the Integrated Education System”, which was conducted by the Centre for Special Educational Needs and Inclusive Education of the Hong Kong Institute of Education from September 2010 to November 2011. The Study consists of a quantitative questionnaire survey with 5,136 respondents from 230 schools and qualitative case studies which feature interviews with 475 stakeholders from 20 schools.

The EOC supports the motion to promote equal rights for people of different sexual orientations
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) issues its statement of support today (6 November 2012) for the motion to be moved by the Hon Cyd HO Sau-lan in the Legislative Council on 7 November 2012 to urge “the Government to expeditiously launch public consultation on enacting legislation to safeguard equal opportunities for and the basic rights of people of different sexual orientations."

The EOC Promotes Equality and Inclusion at the 8th Session of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) will advocate for the advancement of equal rights in the 8th session of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (the Committee), to be convened from 17 to 28 September 2012 in Geneva, Switzerland. The EOC will present its observations concerning the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Hong Kong and propose alternative views on enhancing the full realization of their rights and social integration.

EOC holds sharing session on men’s plights and way out

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (10 August 2012) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 487 in the District Court, on behalf of a man who suffered from heart disease. The plaintiff alleged that his employer had discriminated against him by terminating his employment after he had applied for sick leave for a heart surgery.

Special EOC Meeting
The Equal Opportunities Commission will hold a Special Meeting at 5:00 pm, 10 July 2012 (Tuesday) (tomorrow) to discuss whether the Chairperson’s appointment to be the ExCo Convener would lead to role conflicts. The Chairperson, Mr. LAM Woon-kwong, will make a decision whether to stay on as ExCo Convener as soon as possible after assessing the views and advice from Members.

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (28 June 2012) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap 487 in the District Court on behalf of a wheelchair user. The plaintiff is complaining that she is unable to gain access independently to the premises where she resides, because there are two steps at the front entrance of the building. She is seeking the construction of a permanent ramp to rectify the access problems in the building.

The EOC Welcomes District Court Ruling on Sexual Harassment
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) welcomes today’s judgment (DCEO 9/2010) by the District Court in favour of a woman who was sexually harassed by her colleague in the workplace and that the harasser’s employer was vicariously liable for the sexual harassment act.

EOC Members Meet with the Chief Executive-Elect to Advocate for Equal Education for Ethnic Minorities
Members of the Policy and Research Committee (PARC) of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) met with the Chief Executive-elect, Mr. LEUNG Chun-ying, today (5 June 2012) to reiterate the Commission’s deep concern on the issue of education for ethnic minority (EM) students and call upon the new government to provide these underprivileged students with fair education opportunities.

EOC Announces Findings of the Exploratory Study on Gender Stereotyping and Its Impact on Male Gender
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (Thursday, 10 May 2012) announced the findings of the “Exploratory Study on Gender Stereotyping and Its Impact on Male Gender”, which was based on 340 questionnaires, 10 focus group discussion sessions, 9 individual interviews and two open seminars conducted in 2011 by the Gender Research Centre, Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Finale of Equal Opportunities Diversity Project to Promote Equal Employment Opportunities
To promote equal opportunities and social inclusion, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and RTHK Radio 2 held the finale of the “Equal Opportunities Diversity Project (平等機會多元共融行動)” today (Saturday, 14 April 2012) at Yuen Long Plaza. This project was a 13-month radio programme which ran on RTHK Radio 2 from March 2011 to April 2012. The theme of today’s event was the promotion of equal employment opportunities for all.

EOC Promotes Equal Opportunities through Funding Programme
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) is to promote equal opportunities through its Community Participation Funding Programme.<br /><br />The EOC has supported over 800 projects by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community groups, and schools in the past 15 years to promote public understanding of equal opportunities and the principles and applications of the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, the Family Status Discrimination Ordinance and the Race Discrimination Ordinance through the Community Participation Funding Programme.<br />

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (20 February 2012) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 480 in the District Court on behalf of a shop manager of a beauty salon who alleged that she was discriminated against by her former employer on the ground of her pregnancy by demoting her and then dismissing her when she rejected the demotion.

Dream Big‧Get Ready The EOC encourages youths to break stereotypes
The first sharing session of “Career Challenge 2011/12”, a youth mentorship programme organized by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), was held today (20 January 2012). Miss Prudence Mak, the Founder and Creative Director of Chocolate Rain, a local brand, was the first guest mentor. She shared with more than one hundred secondary school students her experience in breaking stereotypes and overcoming challenges when she first started her venture.

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Pregnancy Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (19 January 2012) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 480 in the District Court, on behalf of a female merchandiser who was dismissed by her employer immediately after her maternity leave. The Plaintiff alleged that her former employer treated her unreasonably and rudely after she had submitted her pregnancy notice, and was subsequently dismissed on the day when she resumed work from maternity leave.

EOC Won the Merit Prize in the 2011 Top 10.hk Website Competition
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) was awarded the Merit Prize for SME Group in the 2011 Top 10.hk Website Competition today (18 January 2012). The Competition was organized by the Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation Ltd. (HKIRC.hk), which is the only local domain registrator. The purpose of the Competition was to identify outstanding websites which can serve as role models among local enterprises.
