"Uniquely Me!": The EOC Encourages Youths to Embrace Their Individuality and Build an Inclusive Hong Kong
Today (16 November 2013), the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) organised a sharing session of its English-language youth development programme, “Uniquely Me!” at the Commission’s office. Mr. Rohit Bhagat, Chief Inspector of Police, and Dr. Theresa Cunanan, Senior Lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist University’s College of International Education, shared with the participants their experiences of overcoming obstacles to find success.

The EOC Exchanges Views with the Philippines Consulate General on Education for the Filipino Community in Hong Kong
Today (13 November 2013), Dr. York CHOW, the Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), met with the Deputy Consul General of the Philippines in Hong Kong, Ms Rosanna Villamore-Voogel, to discuss issues related to education facing the Filipino community in the city. Members of the community were also present at the meeting to share their views.

The EOC Condemns Racially Derogatory Remarks Made on the Internet
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) expressed today (13 November 2013) its concern over abusive and derogatory remarks, made on the internet and through other public channels, by some members of the community in relation to the Typhoon Haiyan disaster in the Philippines.

The EOC expresses concern over derogatory portrayal of SARS patients in a local movie
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) expressed concern over the screening of a Hong Kong movie on last Saturday (26 October 2013), which featured SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) patients as “Zombies” and appealing to negative emotions against them.

Work of the EOC presented at the 18th Annual Meeting and Biennial Conference of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) presented its work on enforcing the anti-discrimination ordinances and promoting equal opportunity messages in Hong Kong to over 150 overseas delegates at the 18th Annual Meeting and Biennial Conference of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APFNHRI) held in Doha, Qatar from 1st to 3rd October 2013. Held for the 18th time, the Conference considers the opportunities and challenges, as well as strategies for advancing human rights in Asia Pacific countries.

The EOC announces findings of “Sexual Harassment – Questionnaire Survey for the Business Sector”
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (Thursday, 29 August 2013) announced the findings of the “Sexual Harassment – Questionnaire Survey for the Business Sector”, which was conducted from June to early August 2013. The Survey was based on 198 returned questionnaires (disseminated by several supporting parties through networks to over 6,000 companies on their membership lists) involving senior human resources and / or administrative staff from companies employing 100 staff or above (69%), and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) employing less than 100 staff (31%).

The EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case – Access to Premises
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) issued today (1 August 2013) legal proceedings in the District Court under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 487, on behalf of a resident of a residential estate, a wheelchair user with mobility difficulties who encounters problems in accessing various locations of the common areas of the residential estate, and was unable to use certain facilities. Despite repeated requests, the management companies of the residential estate have failed to carry out alteration work to address the access barrier issues.

EOC Promotes Equal Opportunities through Funding Programme of Research Projects
The Funding Programme of Research Projects on Equal Opportunities 2013/14 (the Funding Programme) is now open for application. The Funding Programme aims at encouraging eligible academia and not-for-profit organisations with inspiring ideas to undertake innovative research projects. It is hoped that the funded research projects would promote the principles and applications of Hong Kong’s anti-discrimination ordinances.

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Pregnancy Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (2 July 2013) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 480 in the District Court, on behalf of two female security guards who alleged that the Defendant discriminated against them by not offering them employment on the ground of their pregnancy. The Plaintiffs alleged that the Defendant had made repeated remarks about not hiring pregnant staff in recruitment talks, which indicated the company’s discriminatory policy against pregnant women.

The EOC welcomes new Members
Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Dr. York CHOW Yat-ngok, welcomes the appointment of new Commission members announced by the Government today (10 May 2013). The newly appointed Members are Mr. Holden Chow Ho-ding, Dr. Trisha Leahy, Dr. Joseph Lee Kok-long and Ms. Su-Mei Thompson, with effect from 20 May 2013. Twelve incumbent Members have been re-appointed.

Seminar on Mental Health Policy

The EOC announces findings of “Sexual Harassment – Questionnaire Survey for Education Sector”
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (Thursday, 25 April 2013) announced the findings of the “Sexual Harassment – Questionnaire Survey for Education Sector” (the Survey), which was conducted in partnership with the Hong Kong Professional Teachers’ Union (HKPTU) and Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers (HKFEW) in March 2013. A total of 321 completed questionnaires were received for this survey from primary and secondary schools across the territories as well as local tertiary institutions.

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Pregnancy and Disability Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (18 March 2013) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (Cap. 480) and Disability Discrimination Ordinance (Cap. 487) in the District Court on behalf of a female clerical employee who alleged that she was discriminated against by her former employer on the ground of her pregnancy and disability. The Plaintiff was dismissed shortly after she had informed her employer about her pregnancy and disability (umbilical hernia).

“Building Hong Kong Together”: The EOC and Caritas Youth and Community Service Co-Organize Open Forum to Raise Public Awareness on Racial Discrimination
In commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed annually on 21 March, Caritas Youth and Community Service and the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) will co-organize an event this Sunday, 17 March 2013, in the Mongkok Pedestrian Zone, from 1:00pm to 4:30pm. The event aims to raise public awareness on racial discrimination and voice out social problems encountered by ethnic minorities in Hong Kong.

EOC Announces Findings of the Study on Students’ Sexual Attitudes and Views on Sexual Harassment
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (Tuesday, 5 March 2013) announced the findings of the “Study on Students’ Sexual Attitudes and Views on Sexual Harassment”, which was conducted from May to November 2011 by the Department of Special Education and Counseling of the Hong Kong Institute of Education. The Study was based on 5,902 questionnaires involving students of primary and secondary schools and tertiary institutions, 16 focus group discussion sessions involving 131 students, teaching staff, principals and parents.

Launching of Equal Opportunities TV Docu-drama Series
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) announced a Year 2013 promotion initiative today (15 February 2013) by launching a new TV docu-drama series on discriminatory cases, entitled “A Mission for Equal Opportunities” (非常平等任務). Produced by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), the 6 episodes will be broadcast on TVB Jade Channel every Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. beginning 19 February, 2013.

EOC Announces Findings of the Equal Opportunities Awareness Survey
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (Thursday, 17 January 2013) announced the results of a public awareness survey on equal opportunities (EO) conducted from June to August 2012. The survey aimed at gauging public perception towards the concepts of EO, views on the EOC’s work against discrimination and the effectiveness of the EOC’s services. A total of 1,504 respondents from the general public and 341 EOC’s service users were enumerated by telephone interviews and self-administered questionnaires respectively.
