The Government announced today (December 8) that the Chief Executive is pleased to appoint Mrs CHU YEUNG Pak-yu Patricia as the Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) for one year with effect from December 15, 2003.

Hong Kong's First Equal Opportunities Musical
About nine hundred people enjoyed Hong Kong's first "Equal Opportunities Musical", featuring Ms. Gigi LEUNG Wing-kei, Mr. Chris WONG Hoi-kan and Mr. Alex FONG Lik-sun at Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium today (Saturday, 25 October, 2003). The musical was produced by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and RTHK Radio 2.

EOC Members State Support
In relation to Mr. Patrick YU's contract with the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), the matter was extensively discussed among Members at the EOC Meeting. Having discussed the matter, the Chairman of the Commission was given full powers by Members to handle Mr. YU's contract. Members of the EOC fully support the action taken by the Chairman.

EOC Response to Media Enquiries
In response to media enquiries, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) confirms that it has terminated the contract with Mr. Patrick YU Chung-yin. The matter is in the hands of lawyers. As there may be legal proceedings, it is inappropriate to make comments at this stage. This does not affect the work of the EOC, and the Commission will not comment further on the matter.

EO Expo 2003 to Promote Equal Opportunities and Celebrate Diversity
Equal Opportunities Expo, the annual major publicity initiative of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), was launched today (12 October 2003) at Olympian City 1, West Kowloon. "Embracing Equal Opportunities, Celebrating Diversity" is the theme for this year's programme which runs from October through November. A series of events organized or funded by the Commission will be held during this period to promote equal opportunities.

New EOC Chairman Maps Out Top Priorities
The new Chairman of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), Mr. Michael WONG Kin-Chow, has pledged to work towards achieving wider recognition of equal opportunities as his top priority for the Commission. He has identified a closer co-operation with non-governmental organizations and disadvantaged groups, a comprehensive public education programme and an overall review of the Commission's work as three necessary steps to attain his goal.

Promoting Equal Opportunities through Drama
Over 300 drama lovers and young people from 25 secondary schools attended the "Equal Opportunities Seminar on Education in Drama" today (5 October 2003), to learn about underlining the values of equal opportunities through drama. This educational seminar was one of the major initiatives of the "Equal Opportunities Musical", jointly organised by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK).

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (23 September, 2003) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), Cap. 487 in the District Court on behalf of a woman who is a wheelchair user and is unable to gain access to her premises. The woman is seeking the construction of a ramp to the entrance of the building in which she lives.

Survey on SARS Related Difficulties in Work and Social Lives in Hong Kong
In July 2003, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) collaborated with the Chinese University of Hong Kong to conduct an opinion survey about the impact of SARS on our community, in an effort to analyse attitudes and behaviour for future development of a methodology for the Commission to deal with in similar crises, and to establish a strategy for public education.

Court Sets Precedent by Awarding Damages in Pregnancy Discrimination Case
The EOC welcomes the District Court's assessment of damages in the case of Yuen Wai Han v South Elderly Affairs Limited given today (Friday, 23 May 2003). Following an earlier ruling in which the District Court held that an elderly home unlawfully discriminated a pregnant woman by refusing to employ her as a supervisor, the Court today assessed the damages the elderly home should pay to the plaintiff and ordered a total sum of HK$155,000 to be paid.

EOC Calls for Flexibility and Tolerance
Responding to the latest government measures to prevent the spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Hong Kong, the Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) Anna Wu said, "Fighting this disease is a community issue, and members of the community will need to co-operate and be tolerant of those in need. The family members of SARS patients may not be sick. Divisive behaviour such as stigmatization would only hamper surveillance, making it difficult for those who wish to seek medical help, ultimately creating detriment to our society as a whole."

Launching of Equal Opportunities TV Docu-drama Series
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) announced a Year 2003 educational initiative today (12 March 2003) by launching a new TV docu-drama series on discriminatory cases, entitled "A Mission for Equal Opportunities" (非常平等任務). Produced by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), the 8 episodes will be broadcast on TVB Jade Channel every Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. beginning 14 March, 2003.
