The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today issued legal proceedings under the Family Status Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 527 in the District Court on behalf of a person who was dismissed by her employer after her son had fallen sick seriously and she had to take leave to take care of her son.

EOC Organizes Education Conference on Gender Differences in Learning
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (30 November 2001) hosted a conference entitled "Boys and Girls in the 21st Century: Gender Differences in Learning." Ms. Anna Wu, Chairperson of the EOC, explained that the conference was organized to understand the need to provide the best education so that all boys and girls can enjoy equal opportunities in education.

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, Cap. 487 in the District Court on behalf of 5 persons who worked as care-providers in the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Nursing Home in the Kowloon Bay Health Centre. In this case, there are three Defendants, all of whom were Richland Gardens residents at the time, who allegedly interfered with the care-providers as they went to or left work, and refused to let them pass through Richland Gardens in the same way as other members of the public.

Inclusion and Equality for All
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) staged a community roadshow with the Caritas Community Centre - Tsuen Wan today (25 November 2001) at the Tsuen Wan Plaza. "Accepting Persons with a Mental/Ex-Mental Illness" was the theme of the event. This community roadshow was part of the EO Expo 2001, which promotes the concept of "Inclusion and Equality for All".

EOC Releases Study Report on the Procedures and Training Needs of the Immigration Department in Handling Persons with Disabilities
On the initiative of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) in August 2000, the Secretary for Security invited the EOC to provide advice “to enhance the relevant internal guidelines and staff training” to the Immigration Department, after the disappearance of Yu Man-Hon, an autistic boy, then 15 year-old who was mistakenly sent across the border by immigration officers last year.

Release of the Study Report on the Procedures and Training Needs of the Immigration Department in Handling Persons with Disabilities
The Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), Ms. Anna WU, and Director (Disability), Mr. Frederick TONG, will meet the media at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, 30 October 2001) to release the EOC's study report on the procedures and training needs of the Immigration Department in handling persons with disabilities.

Equal Opportunities Expo 2001 Kicks Off with Film on Disability
A Japanese film about a hearing impaired woman has been selected by the Equal Opportunities Commission to launch its EO Expo 2001 today. Officiating at the launching ceremony, the Chairperson of the EOC, Ms. Anna Wu explained, " For the first time, the Commission has chosen a film to launch this year's Expo because it conveys a strong message of acceptance and respect for all. The EOC believes in a barrier-free environment where people with or without disabilities can enjoy equal opportunities to develop to their fullest potential." Ms. Wu said this belief is clearly portrayed by the film.

Court Rules there is Power to Order Apology
Commenting on the judgment delivered today (5 October 2001) by the Court of Final Appeal in MA Bik Yung v. KO Chuen, Ms. Anna WU, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), said, "The judgment sends out a clear message that harassment or discrimination against a person with disability is not tolerated in our society. The Court of Final Appeal condemned the defendant's conduct towards Ms. MA and commended her for her courage to vindicate herself."

EOC Advises on Secondary School Places Allocation System Complaints Procedures
On 22 June 2001, the High Court ruled that the Secondary School Places Allocation (SSPA) System, as administered by the Education Department, is unlawful and discriminatory. Since then, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has received a number of enquiries from parents regarding what they should do if their children are discriminated against in the current allocation exercise.

EOC Hosts Regional Workshop to Promote and Protect Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Forum on National Human Rights Institutions (Asia Pacific Forum) is holding a Regional Workshop on Economic, Social and Cultural rights and the Right to Development in Hong Kong from Wednesday, 11 July to Friday, 13 July 2001. As in past years, an annual Workshop on a theme of common interest to the Asia Pacific Forum members is held in different cities in the region. This Workshop is co-sponsored by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID).

The Equal Opportunities Commission's Code of Practice on Education under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance comes into operation today (Friday, July 6, 2001), after the Legislative Council passed a resolution to amend the proposed COP. The resolution was published in the government gazette today.

Launching of Equal Opportunities TV Series for Children
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) announces a Year 2001 educational initiative today (29 June 2001). A TV situation drama series on equal opportunities issues, entitled "Equal Opportunities School" (平等校園), produced by Cable TV, will be broadcast on Cable TV's Children Channel from Monday to Friday at 5:30 p.m. The four-week programme will run from 2 July to 27 July 2001.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today stated that the District Court has dismissed the case of NG Shui Lan vs CHAN Sai Man and Global Centre Development Limited with the agreement of all parties with no findings as to liability. Each side has agreed to pay its own costs.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (10 May 2001) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (Cap 480) in the District Court on behalf of a woman who was told to resign before she reached her retirement age. But the company has retained a male employee, who continued to work after he was formally retired at the same time as the plaintiff.

Equal Opportunities Commission Launches "Prevent Sexual Harassment in the Work Place" Campaign
Over two million passengers travelling daily on the Mass Transit Railway, Kowloon Canton Railway and Light Rail Transit will learn more about sexual harassment from a public education campaign launched at stations in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories as of 27 April 2001. This month-long campaign features a poster ad, highlighting different scenarios of sexual harassment in the work place, and educates employers about their vicarious liability for employees' actions.

EOC Welcomes Settlement with Government Departments on the Kowloon Bay Health Centre Incident
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) welcomes a settlement that is finally reached among the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (the former Urban Services Department), the Home Affairs Department, the Lands Department and the Complainant in respect of the complaints lodged against the aforementioned government departments. EOC Reacts to District Court Judgment
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) is disappointed at the District Court ruling today (8 March 2001), in a sexual harassment case lodged under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, brought by the plaintiff against the instructor or "Sifu" of the student in the course of providing martial arts training. Although the Court criticized the defendant's evidence in several instances, it found that the burden of proof had not been adequately discharged by the plaintiff.

Media Seminar to Discuss the Attitudes and Skills in Reporting Persons with a Mental Illness
Over 200 participants attended the Media Seminar on News Reporting and Mental Illness held on 24 February 2001 (today) to discuss the attitudes & skills in reporting persons with a mental illness. Representatives from media organizations, government departments, social welfare agencies, rehabilitation groups, psychiatric hospitals, journalism departments of various tertiary institutes and users of psychiatric rehabilitation service shared their experiences and joined in discussions which focused on a positive approach in reporting the issue of mental illness.
