EOC Statement: The EOC refutes allegations of a former employee
In response to media reports regarding a former employee of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), Mr. Josiah Chok, lodging a complaint against the EOC with the Labour Department, the EOC states clearly today (23 December 2014) that it will not specifically comment on the internal employment matters of an employee as it sees it as a violation of the employee’s privacy.

EOC Welcomes Passage of Sex Discrimination (Amendment) Bill 2014
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) welcomes the passage of the Sex Discrimination (Amendment) Bill 2014 in the Legislative Council today (3 December). With the passage of the Bill, sexual harassment by customers against providers or prospective providers of goods, facilities or services – even if the act occurs on local ships and aircraft outside Hong Kong – will become unlawful. The Amendment Bill will become effective on the day of gazettal on 12 December 2014.

Public consultation on Discrimination Law Review completed
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) launched a public consultation on the review of discrimination law on 8 July 2104. The three-month public consultation exercise, which had been extended by three and a half weeks, was completed on 31 October 2014.

EOC Presents to UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women
Representatives of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) highlighted the challenges faced by women in Hong Kong at the 59th session of the UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (the Committee) on 20 October 2014 in Geneva, prior to a hearing by the Committee on the Third Report of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) scheduled for 23 October 2014.

The EOC announces findings of the “Study on Discrimination in the Hong Kong Workplace”
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (4 September 2014) announced the findings of the “Study on Discrimination in the Hong Kong Workplace”, which was conducted to assess the types and extent of workplace discrimination, identify the common forms of stereotyping, and solicit views from employers and employees on the effective ways to redress the problems.

The EOC shares concerns of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights on human rights situation in Hong Kong
At the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland today (8 May 2014), the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (the Committee) conducted a hearing to examine the HKSAR’s third report on the implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (the ICESCR), which was submitted to the Committee as part of China’s second report. Representing the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) at the hearing session were Dr. John TSE Wing-ling, Convenor of its Policy and Research Committee and Dr. Ferrick CHU, the Commission’s Head of Policy and Research.

The EOC presents an alternative report at the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

“Hong Kong for All: Vision 2020”: The EOC and Caritas Youth and Community Service Co-organize Public Event in Observation of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
Today (16 March 2014), Caritas Youth and Community Service and the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) co-organized an event in celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) at Caritas Community Centre - Kowloon, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. This marked the second year of collaboration between the EOC and Caritas to commemorate the IDERD, which is observed annually on 21 March, and raise public awareness on racial discrimination. The theme of this year’s event, “Hong Kong for All: Vision 2020,” was formulated with the aim of encouraging the public to envision racial inclusion in Hong Kong and what is needed to achieve this goal by the year 2020.

The EOC announces findings of “Sexual Harassment and Discrimination in Employment – Questionnaire Survey for Flight Attendants”
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (Thursday, 20 February 2014) announced the findings of the “Sexual Harassment and Discrimination – Questionnaire Survey for Flight Attendants”, which was conducted in partnership with the Hong Kong Flight Attendants Alliance (HKFAA) from late November 2013 to early January 2014. The Survey was based on 392 returned questionnaires which were distributed to 9,000 flight attendants through HKFAA.

EOC Gives Legal Assistance in Disability and Pregnancy Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (24 January 2014) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (Cap. 487) (DDO) and Sex Discrimination Ordinance (Cap 480) (SDO) in the District Court on behalf of a kindergarten teacher. The plaintiff alleged that her contract was not renewed after she had suffered from work injuries and after she had informed the employer of her pregnancy.

The EOC Welcomes District Court Ruling on Pregnancy Discrimination
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) welcomes today’s judgment (DCEO 11/2012) by the District Court in favour of a woman who was discriminated against on the ground of pregnancy under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (SDO) by her former employer who inserted a one day break between her old and new contracts in order to deprive her of statutory maternity leave pay. In addition to awarding the Plaintiff, among others, the damages of injury to feelings and loss of maternity leave pay, the Court also orders that the Defendant to pay exemplary damages to the Plaintiff.
