An "Equal Opportunities Month" is organised by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) in November 1999 to commend the efforts of community organizations in promoting equal opportunities and to emphasise the importance of community partnership. Meeting on 30.8.99 between Directorate of the EOC and Concern Groups
Ms. Anna Wu, Chairperson of EOC, Mrs. Angela Ho, Chief Executive and the Directors of the Disability and Gender Divisions, Mr. Frederick Tong and Dr. Priscilla Chung, met with representatives of concern groups today. The meeting exchanged information and views on a number of disability issues. Ms. Wu emphasised that the EOC had been and would continue to tackle certain major issues at the policy level and aim to achieve sustainable development on such policy issues.

EOC Releases the Results of a Study on Design & Technology and Home Economics in Secondary Schools
The EOC today (28 July 1999) released its results of a study on Design & Technology and Home Economics in secondary schools. Results of the study showed that co-educational schools offered both Design & Technology and Home Economics while most single sex schools only offered one of the subjects. All single-sex boy's schools only offered Design & Technology but 4% of single sex girl's schools offered both subjects. Only 14.5% of co-educational schools said that the pupils are free to select the subject they want to study; 21.8% said that the pupils take both subjects.

Equal Opportunities Commission Invites Applications To Its 1999/2000 Funding Programme (2nd Batch)
To join hands with the community to create a society where there is no discrimination and no barriers to equal opportunities, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) announced that applications for the second batch of the 1999/2000 "Community Participation Funding Programme on Equal Opportunities" would start today (20 July 1999). Equal Opportunities Commission's Training Module for Children Received Overwhelming Response
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) launched today (26 June 1999) a training module for children focusing on equal opportunities in relation to gender and disability issues. The EOC is holding a series of workshops for kindergarten teachers to familiarize them on how to use the training module. About 750 teachers from over 330 kindergartens and child care centres have registered for the training workshops and the first workshop was held today.

Dr. Fanny Cheung Met with CEDAW Committee Members
Dr. Fanny Cheung, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) met with 9 members of the United Nations CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women) committee on January 26 and briefed them on the work of the EOC. She also presented the EOC's response on the government's CEDAW Report. The EOC has consulted 22 women's organizations in drafting its report. The need for a central mechanism on women's affairs in Hong Kong was the common consensus of the women's groups.
