The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) welcomes today (31 December 2019) the judgment (DCEO 3/2018) by the District Court on 30 December, which ruled in favour of a woman (the “Claimant”) unlawfully discriminated by her employer because of her pregnancy.

The EOC Gives Legal Assistance in a Sexual Harassment Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (10 December 2019) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (SDO), Cap. 480 in the District Court, on behalf of a woman (the Claimant) who claims that she was sexually harassed in the course of receiving massage service. She alleged sexual harassment in that Respondent 1, a male masseur, inappropriately massaged her outer and inner thighs while providing foot massage service to her. Respondent 2 being the employer of Respondent 1 was vicariously liable for the alleged sexual harassment acts.

The EOC Gives Legal Assistance in a Pregnancy Discrimination Case
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (15 November 2019) issued legal proceedings under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (SDO), Cap. 480 in the District Court, on behalf of a woman (the Claimant) who previously worked for a company (the Respondent) as a Senior Manager. The Claimant claims that the Respondent discriminated against her because of her pregnancy by (i) not giving her an end-of-year bonus and (ii) not renewing her employment contract.

EOC Calls for Stronger Efforts to Make Voting More Accessible to Persons with Disabilities and Ethnic Minorities
The 2019 District Council Election will soon be held on 24 November. The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) calls on the Government, candidates, persons concerned and frontline staff to take active measures to ensure that the equal voting rights of electors with disabilities or from ethnic communities will not be deprived due to inaccessible polling stations or language barriers.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has today (1 November 2019) issued legal proceedings under the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (Cap. 487) (“DDO”) in the District Court, on behalf of a foreign domestic helper (the Claimant) who claimed that, by terminating her employment, her former employer (the Respondent) discriminated against her on the ground of the disabilities of her associates (i.e. her deceased parents).

EOC and RTHK Co-host “Embracing Social Inclusion Project” to Promote Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities
To foster inclusion of people with disabilities (PWDs) and deepen public understanding of the Disability Discrimination Ordinance (DDO), the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) jointly hosted a public education event titled “Embracing Social Inclusion” today (13 October 2019). Representatives of rehabilitation groups and other guests performed or shared their experiences on disability inclusion at the event.

The EOC Announces Results of the “Generation i” Multimedia Competition
With the aim of firing up local youths’ creativity and commitment to promoting equal opportunity concepts, the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) co-organised with the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Jockey Club Media 21 the “Generation i” programme last year. The programme featured workshops on comics drawing and video production conducted by veteran artists, as well as a competition consisting of “Comics” and “Short Video” divisions. All secondary school students were invited to help advocate mutual respect, diversity and inclusion through comic strips and short videos they created.

The EOC Holds Public Event in Honour of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
A 200-strong audience consisting of Consuls-General, representatives of Government departments and NGOs, advocates of ethnic minority (EM) rights, as well as students and citizens, attended the “Equal Opportunities Diversity Project 2019” Event at E-Max, Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre (KITEC) today (3 March 2019), in celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD). Co-organised by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) and Radio Television Hong Kong Radio 2, the public event aimed to bring different sectors together to advance racial equality and create a pluralistic and inclusive society.

The EOC Releases Findings of the Questionnaire Survey on Sexual Harassment for the Sports Sector
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (25 February 2019) released findings from its “Sexual Harassment – Questionnaire Survey for Sports Sector 2018”. The survey was conducted by the EOC in collaboration with the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) between July and October 2018, which was the second sector-wide survey of its type following the baseline Survey conducted in 2014. The follow-up study was conducted to understand the latest situation about the formulation of anti-sexual harassment policies of the sports sector. It also explored whether the National Sports Associations (NSAs) have sufficient resources to provide awareness training for their staff and coaches on preventing sexual harassment.

The EOC Releases Findings of its Territory-wide Study on Sexual Harassment of University Students in Hong Kong
The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) today (21 January 2019) released findings from “Break the Silence: Territory-wide Study on Sexual Harassment of University Students in Hong Kong”. The Study found that nearly one-fourth (23%) of university students were sexually harassed within 12 months before the survey, but only 2.5% of students had lodged a complaint with the university after experiencing sexual harassment.
